How Long Does Stump Grinding Take? (Real Times by Size)

·4 min read·By the Grind It Stump Removal team

Most residential stumps are done in under an hour. Here's how to estimate the time for yours.

Customers often ask if they need to take the whole afternoon off work to be on-site. Almost never. Most residential stumps are done in 20 to 60 minutes — including setup and cleanup. Here's what determines where your job falls in that range.

Time by stump size

Stump diameterTypical time on siteGrinding time itself
Small (under 12")25–35 min10–15 min
Medium (12–24")45–60 min20–35 min
Large (24–36")60–90 min40–60 min
Extra-large (36"+)90 min–3 hrs60 min–2 hrs

The "on site" times include unloading the grinder, walking the job, setting up turf protection if needed, grinding, raking the chips, and loading back up.

What slows the job down

Hardwood species

Florida live oak and laurel oak are dense — they take longer per inch than softer species. Slash pine, by contrast, grinds fast. Palms are big but soft. As a rule of thumb:

  • Fastest: Pines, melaleucas, Brazilian pepper
  • Average: Maple, elm, palms, citrus
  • Slowest: Live oak, laurel oak, water oak, mahogany

Tight access

If we have to use a 24- or 36-inch-wide grinder instead of a full-size machine because of a gate or pool deck, expect the grinding portion to take 30–50% longer. The trade-off is worth it — we'd rather take an extra 20 minutes than damage your gate or fence.

Rocks and roots

Buried rocks chew up grinder teeth. Big surface roots add to the volume we're chewing through. Most yards in Lutz/Tampa Bay are sandy with light root systems, so this is usually fine — but lots near pasture, rock outcrops, or recent construction sometimes hide surprises.

Depth

Going from 6 inches below grade to 18 inches below grade roughly doubles the grinding time. If your project requires a deep grind for a slab or replant, plan for 1.5–2× the table above.

What speeds the job up

  • Bundling stumps. Two stumps in one trip = one setup, one breakdown, one drive. Per-stump time drops.
  • Clear path. Move any vehicles, lawn furniture, or kids' toys out of the access path before we arrive.
  • Marked irrigation/sprinklers. If you can flag valves and lines we'll work confidently and faster.
  • Keeping the chips. Skipping haul-off shaves real time off the cleanup phase.

Do you need to be home?

Not for most residential jobs. If you've already approved the written quote and we have access (gate code, side gate, etc.), we can grind and clean up while you're at work. We'll send photos when we're done.

How fast can you get on the schedule?

Most quotes are returned the same day. Standard residential stump jobs are typically scheduled within the week. Major storm cleanups during hurricane season push the schedule out — we triage by hazard severity.
